Artist Blacksmithing is all about hot forging allied to the medium: metal.
Through exploring and challenging the material you will work towards creating a personal vocabulary in hot forged metal. Process, skills and technical understanding are combined with ideas, concepts and source materials, to develop designs. You will be encouraged to view technical skills as the means to creative end rather than an end in themselves, and discover that experimentation is an essential part of the design process and learn that creativity is not solely evidenced according to the final outcomes but also the journey travelled.

The programme is defining and redefining the cultural positioning of blacksmithing.
The result: graduates who are making a significant impact on contemporary forged metal design, both nationally and internationally.

Cultural Studies
All students study Cultural Studies as part of their degree path. These studies help to provide a better understanding and awareness of the importance of culture within their work.

Key Facts:
– BA (Hons) Artist Blacksmithing is the only undergraduate programme of its type in the UK.
Taught in the largest forge training facility in Europe – The Rural Crafts Centre
– Attracts ambitious and diverse students from both the UK and abroad.

– Focus on the development of your professional and entrepreneurial skills.

After this course:
Graduates become technically expert and critically aware designers in forged metals with a broad range of transferable skills. Many graduates develop careers as ‘sole traders’, setting up their own professional design studios and workshops and producing major pieces of public artwork or objects for domestic, architectural or public environments. Alternatively graduates can choose to become journeymen working for smiths across the world or explore a range of broader opportunities in the creative arts sector through consultancy, community arts, teaching, and residencies and/or undertake postgraduate study – find out more about our MA courses.

Dan Nauman, designer, owner and artisan at Bighorn Forge, has been forging since 1979, professionally since 1993. His work spans many styles of ornamental and architectural metalwork, and is primarily hand-forged. Gates, railings, lighting, furniture, fire-tools, sculpture and more are commonly made in Nauman’s studio. One of his specialties is the process of French repousse’, applying flowing acanthus leaves, and intricate rosettes to his metalwork. Nauman’s Northern School for Blacksmiths, a division of Bighorn Forge, is where Nauman teaches up to eleven different workshops, from beginning forging to French repousse’. Nauman also teaches, demo’s and lectures around the USA at colleges, craft schools, and museums. Nauman has been fortunate to have restored and reproduced work by the famed Austrian born master blacksmith, Cyril Colnik (1871-1958), and also produced a video on Colnik entitled, Forged Elegance, that aired on Wisconsin Public Television, and also Milwaukee Public Television in 1998. Nauman served as a board member for the Artist-Blacksmith’s Association of North America (ABANA) from 2000-2006, and chaired the Controlled Hand Forging committee, which wrote 28 lessons about basic forging. Currently, Nauman is the editor/designer of ABANA’s The Hammer’s Blow, and as of 2017, will also be the editor/designer of The Anvil’s Ring.

The new workshop is now situated in the rural outskirts of Darlington and Northallerton, in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, with all our work carried out at the forge being hand crafted. The business has now been trading since 2003 and the team of blacksmiths are able to cater for various demands within the private and the pubic sectors both domestic and commercial.

Adrian Wood is a university graduate with a degree in fine art sculpture from The University of London. A chance visit to a forge gave Adrian Wood his first taste of blacksmithing. He recalls; ”From the first moment I hit the hot steel I knew what I wanted to do.”

Adrian`s first job was at a renowned workshop near York where he worked on a number of prestigious projects. After which he worked for Brian Russell, widely regarded as one of the finest blacksmiths in the UK. Brian’s approach and processes to creating bespoke and uniquely designed metalwork had an enormous effect on the designs and processes created by Adrian Wood Artist Blacksmiths.

Traditional blacksmithing techniques are used to create contemporary and innovative ways to fulfil the client’s needs. The designs are beautifully hand drawn with delicate attention given to the smallest of details, resulting in fine craftsmanship, superb detailing and a substantial build quality that reflects a belief in a lasting beauty and quality.

Adrian’s area of expertise lies in his ability to understand the client’s needs and provide detailed drawings and finally to create the work to a high standard and build quality.

Shrewsbury, UK

A graduate from the BA(hons) Artistic Blacksmithing program at Hereford College of Arts, and proud Hereford Anvils Alumni, I have been Blacksmithing since the age of 14. Having worked all around the midlands on projects of all sizes, I now base myself at my workshop on the outskirts of Shrewsbury, as well as at the Blists Hill Victorian Living Museum, part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust. Having taken over the running of the workshop shortly after graduating in 2018, I find myself working on many projects, from restoration work, to brand new private commissions, nothing is too big or too small.
A big part of my time in the workshop, in addition to completing commissions, is teaching, demonstrating, and talking to members of the public. I cherish the opportunity to talk to others about a craft that I know and love, and always welcome the opportunity for people to have a go at Blacksmithing on a pre-arranged taster day, or for people to ask as many questions as they can whilst spending their time within the four walls of the workshop.
There is never a dull moment within my workshop and the doors are always open. There is always space to welcome new clients, regardless of the size of the commission or the budget that is set aside. I look forward to working with you soon, and welcoming you into the workshop.
