Principally a garden designer, but have designed numerous features for open spaces with forged steel. Working mostly with Terrence Clark and Rebecca Knott, they have turned design concepts into amazing pieces of artwork that I am very proud of.

Firebird Forge is a full working forge which offers traditional and contemporarily designed commissions in various metals; as well as the usual restoration and repair work. The forge is also run, by appointment, as a teaching school in traditional blacksmithing techniques. Although the forge is open to the general public to allow them to come and learn how to blacksmith on a day to day basis, further training is also given to younger smiths in the form of work placements from college.
Individuals from as far as Russia and Australia have come to learn to forge at the school and the owner, David Mortimer (Mort the Blacksmith), has carried out commissions across the Uk since the year 2000.

BlacksmitHer Radio is a weekly podcast specifically about blacksmithing for blacksmiths. Would you like to know what your fellow blacksmith peers are saying about their blacksmithing businesses or get inspired by a project they are working on? You can do that by listening to their interviews on BlacksmitHER Radio. I’ve learned valuable skills from some of the best blacksmiths through workshops and classes, but mostly from having conversations and connecting with them. So I thought by sharing those connections and conversations through podcasts, you too will be able to learn something new about blacksmithing and your fellow mates.

What is BlacksmitHER Radio? An audio only podcast show that:
• Interviews blacksmiths around the world.
• Provides relatable topics that can help blacksmiths such as tool usage, pricing and time management.
• Offers education, entertainment and a sense of community and camaraderie among the guests and listeners.
Where can you listen to BlacksmitHER Radio?
• On your phone with a podcast player app
• On your computer from the BlacksmitHER podcast tab on the website
• In iTunes, under podcasts search BlacksmitHER Radio

Artistic and Architectural Bespoke Metalwork based in South Wales

Paul and Heiner
Kronengasse 6, Pliezhausen, Germany

Heiner Zimmermann forges art and translates traditional forms into contemporary visual aesthetics. He is an ambassador of his craft. Growing up in his father’s workshop he learned and appreciated the ancient techniques and traditions of hammer and anvil. In his work Heiner combines a traditional formal language practiced in ancient craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetic expression. Heiner is interested in modern aesthetics which include a revised use of traditional techniques and materials and this is an approach he teaches as a professor in Arts and Craft, at HDK University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

He finished his formal training in 1991 and was awarded the national “Good Design Award” (now known as “Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany”). Other awards followed. During his formative years, supported by several scholarships, he travelled and worked for renowned metal artists across the continent and in the United States. He then went on to do further training in the conservation of art and architectural history in Venice. After his master’s certificate in 1998 he took over his father forge in Pliezhausen, Germany.

Heiner Zimmermann’s works is always the result of a search for form, structure and surface that touch and move the viewer. His work combines a respect for the forging tradition and its material with contemporary art and design. Each work is forged through a highly individual creation process. As each unique work appears its formal development symbolizes the union of an idea, and human will, with the material – iron.

April Cottage,Binnerton Road, Leedstown, Hayle, Cornwall. UK TR276BJ

I use a variety of sheet metals, hand formed and tempered, the metal is sculpted to create individual bespoke pieces which are inspired by nature and representational in design.
My metal working skills have developed over a lifetime of working both as a welder and panelbeater, in a variety of roles.
I have created a large portfolio of work both domestic and architectural all of which are available to view on my website: http://www.nigelwills.com
I am represented in Cornwall by several discerning galleries but I am interested in extending my client base into fulfilling more private commissions, working closely with individual clients to design and create spectacular personalised pieces.

The Thirsty Bear Blacksmithing Company is an artistic metalworking studio using the ancient art of blacksmithing to create contemporary and traditional metalwork that blows people’s minds. It is run by artist blacksmith Jake Bowers. It’s called Thirsty Bear Blacksmithing Company because I work very hard, am partial to a berry or two and have a few cubs to feed.

Using a coke-fired forge, where steel bars are heated and then forged over an anvil, I can guarantee that all products have the individual touch of a craftsman. We’re big enough to cope with any job but small enough to guarantee the kind of attention to detail that you should expect from an expert craftman.

Jake graduated with a triple distinction Extended diploma in Blacksmithing and Metalwork from Plumpton College and trained as a silversmith at Helliden’s Folkhogskola in Sweden in 1998. He also holds a journeyman’s certificate from Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths founded in 1299.

On this website you’ll see galleries of my completed work and works in progress. I produce everything from traditional wrought iron gates in steel to jewellery in precious metals for a variety of public and private clients. I also use this website to share what we’re up to with our latest commissions with our customers.

The Thirsty Bear Forge has been a member of Checkatrade, Britain’s premier source of vetted, reputable tradespeople since July 2014, which means you can independently verify what previous customers have said about our work. It’s a hard won reputation I guard very passionately and think about every time I start a piece of work.
