Hot forging is at the core of what I do at Bringsty. I will design and make items to commission, for galleries, exhibitions and demonstrations. I will also repair and restore existing and historical ironwork, and make items to a client’s specification. The process of producing bespoke ironwork to suit the site and client is what I enjoy. Taking a client’s vision for an empty space, and realising their vision by guiding them through the possibilities and practicalities that hot forging, traditional and contemporary techniques can bring to items of originality and longevity.

The result is beautiful, well-loved pieces, fit for today’s world that last a lifetime.

There has been an Overwrought Ironworks in Hastings for many years providing the community with the traditional services of an iron worker. However it was only in 2014 when Tobias Cobrin took over the sadly silent workshop, and built and then lit his handmade forge, did it spring back into life and become Overwrought Forge, providing the full range of handcrafted and handforged products from small domestic items to gates and railings.

Family run since 1982, we are based in Worcestershire producing a vast range of work. Small to large domestic to commercial. Working out of a large workshop we blend modern fabrication and blacksmithing to try and forge a niche in the market. Always looking to take on challenging work and produce new products.

The new workshop is now situated in the rural outskirts of Darlington and Northallerton, in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, with all our work carried out at the forge being hand crafted. The business has now been trading since 2003 and the team of blacksmiths are able to cater for various demands within the private and the pubic sectors both domestic and commercial.

Adrian Wood is a university graduate with a degree in fine art sculpture from The University of London. A chance visit to a forge gave Adrian Wood his first taste of blacksmithing. He recalls; ”From the first moment I hit the hot steel I knew what I wanted to do.”

Adrian`s first job was at a renowned workshop near York where he worked on a number of prestigious projects. After which he worked for Brian Russell, widely regarded as one of the finest blacksmiths in the UK. Brian’s approach and processes to creating bespoke and uniquely designed metalwork had an enormous effect on the designs and processes created by Adrian Wood Artist Blacksmiths.

Traditional blacksmithing techniques are used to create contemporary and innovative ways to fulfil the client’s needs. The designs are beautifully hand drawn with delicate attention given to the smallest of details, resulting in fine craftsmanship, superb detailing and a substantial build quality that reflects a belief in a lasting beauty and quality.

Adrian’s area of expertise lies in his ability to understand the client’s needs and provide detailed drawings and finally to create the work to a high standard and build quality.

Coming from a background in archaeology, my name is Dan Goodwin and I’m a jack’o’all’trades blacksmith with a passion for this wonderful craft. I offer teaching and educational demonstrations, as well as designing and producing commissioned ironwork alongside creating my own designs for sale.

Graduating from the National School of Blacksmithing in 2016 with Triple Distinction, I played the role of Journeyman for two years and settled myself in the 18th century grounds of Catton Hall, South Derbyshire, in 2018. From here, I’ve had the pleasure to teach a colorful array of people and take on an ever increasing range of jobs.

I’m happiest when I’m travelling the country and bringing the craft out into the sunlight, telling and learning the stories and history that accompany the people I meet and the trade I practice. Though the village smithy may not play the same role it did in pre-industrial times, I still firmly believe the smith has a role to play in both supporting and working within the local community.

Always happy to discuss bespoke projects, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at FirehoundForge@outlook.com

Paul and Heiner
Kronengasse 6, Pliezhausen, Germany

Heiner Zimmermann forges art and translates traditional forms into contemporary visual aesthetics. He is an ambassador of his craft. Growing up in his father’s workshop he learned and appreciated the ancient techniques and traditions of hammer and anvil. In his work Heiner combines a traditional formal language practiced in ancient craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetic expression. Heiner is interested in modern aesthetics which include a revised use of traditional techniques and materials and this is an approach he teaches as a professor in Arts and Craft, at HDK University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

He finished his formal training in 1991 and was awarded the national “Good Design Award” (now known as “Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany”). Other awards followed. During his formative years, supported by several scholarships, he travelled and worked for renowned metal artists across the continent and in the United States. He then went on to do further training in the conservation of art and architectural history in Venice. After his master’s certificate in 1998 he took over his father forge in Pliezhausen, Germany.

Heiner Zimmermann’s works is always the result of a search for form, structure and surface that touch and move the viewer. His work combines a respect for the forging tradition and its material with contemporary art and design. Each work is forged through a highly individual creation process. As each unique work appears its formal development symbolizes the union of an idea, and human will, with the material – iron.
