As we return to relative normality, the BABA council are excited with the challenge of organising an event that will hopefully draw you out of your homes, forges and workshops and entice you to make the journey to Holme Lacy Campus, Hereford.
Come join us for an exciting weekend of creative blacksmithing, forging and the rekindling of friendships from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th September 2022.
We have a full programme to keep you enthralled and inspired over the three day event. Lots going on throughout the day followed by evening entertainment in the village hall. Slide presentations from the invited demonstrators, an evening meal (which you need to book), a cash bar and possibly an impromptu singalong BABA style! Please bring your musical instruments and singing voice with you.
For the first time in three years the BABA AGM will be in person, on the Saturday morning 24th July. This is your chance to hear from your chairman Luke McCullagh about what the council have been doing over the past year and the plans for the future. You will also have the opportunity to vote for the new council members who will take the association forward through 2022 into 2023. Headlining in the main forge, there will be demonstrations by three talented smiths, all practising here in the UK.
Jim Whitson from Scotland. Jim won the coveted TonyPandy Cup in 2021, which is presented annually by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths.
Junko Moiri from Wales. Junko Mori, a Japanese artist and metalworker born in Yokohama, Japan, works in both mild steel and pure silver. Junko’s work is exhibited in galleries and museums around the world from Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums in Scotland to The Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, to Honolulu Museum Art in Hawaii to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Sam Pearce from England. Sam was awarded 1st prize at the World Forging Championships held at Stia, Italy in 2015 and again in 2017.
These will be three very varied forging demonstrations and each talented smith will also be giving a slide presentation of their work for you to enjoy.
In the fun forging area there will be around 30 forges lit as well as a gas furnace and possibly an induction heater. Sponsored by Westons Cider and Special Steel Sections, you can participate in the themed forging competition to create a bottle opener, be it stylish, funky, traditional or whatever you wish but it must crack open the bottle of cider! Special Steel Sections are generously sponsoring the use of Pure Iron for you to use to create your bottle opener. Mild steel will also be available to use.
The Future Fuels Group will have several forges set up using different fuels, giving you the opportunity to trial and feedback on the use of a variety of fuels as you create your bottle opener.
Fuels available to use will include coal from the Forest of Dean – Yorkley seam & High Delf Seam. There will also be Anvil coke and composite fuel Starsite from CPL, Hargreaves coke and charcoal. In addition, there will be an induction heater on demonstration from Nigel Barnett, hopefully a Ceramic Chip forge and a forging press demonstration from John Nicholson.
“Show Me How” is a new addition to the BABA conference. This will be in the demo forge area with one hour slots where the “Show Me How” team will demonstrate different skills and techniques as requested by you.

A fantastic opportunity to view the global smithing viral sensation The #150mmchallenge exhibition directly on its return from a hugely successful USA tour. The book to accompany the exhibition will be on sale £20.00 cash.
The NHIG (National Heritage Ironwork Group) will have a display on boards of the work currently being carried out alongside examples of traditional heritage ironwork.
If you have a recent piece of work you are proud of, bring it along and we will create an impromptu BABA exhibition for the weekend.
On view each day will be a selection of Zoom videos from the Hereford College of Arts archive starring international smiths talking about their practise and demonstrating their work will be on view each day. These talks were setup for the students during the Covid lockdown and Delyth Done has kindly agreed to share some of the talks with BABA throughout the weekend of the conference.
If you wish to participate in the fun forging, please bring your own PPE, especially safety glasses and stout working boots.
To ensure the safety of all delegates and staff, please take a Covid test before attending and please do not attend if positive or you feel unwell.
