Traditionally trained Blacksmith with contemporary design.

A4A Art for Architecture owned by John McKenna Sculptor have extensive working experience and practical design sense to undertake large-scale public art projects drawing on over twenty years of sculpture experience. We work with a variety of media, including large bronze sculpture cast here at our own foundry the A4A Art bronze foundry, and fabricate large stainless steel and steel structures at our studio workshop in Turnberry, near Girvan, Ayrshire. In the past besides working in bronze and steel we have created art as glazed brick architectural reliefs, metalwork fabrications, stone and cast stone panels. This cumulative mass of experience over the years and genuine creativity has enabled us to resolve many artworks leaving as many delighted collectors, clients and the public to enjoy our work for generations to come. We create all sorts of artworks from cast bronze portrait statues, to colossal stainless steel figures, unique bespoke structural canopies, railings, gates, way markers, one-off bollards, signposts, smaller awards and trophies.

Coming from a background in archaeology, my name is Dan Goodwin and I’m a jack’o’all’trades blacksmith with a passion for this wonderful craft. I offer teaching and educational demonstrations, as well as designing and producing commissioned ironwork alongside creating my own designs for sale.

Graduating from the National School of Blacksmithing in 2016 with Triple Distinction, I played the role of Journeyman for two years and settled myself in the 18th century grounds of Catton Hall, South Derbyshire, in 2018. From here, I’ve had the pleasure to teach a colorful array of people and take on an ever increasing range of jobs.

I’m happiest when I’m travelling the country and bringing the craft out into the sunlight, telling and learning the stories and history that accompany the people I meet and the trade I practice. Though the village smithy may not play the same role it did in pre-industrial times, I still firmly believe the smith has a role to play in both supporting and working within the local community.

Hot forging is at the core of what I do at Bringsty. I will design and make items to commission, for galleries, exhibitions and demonstrations. I will also repair and restore existing and historical ironwork, and make items to a client’s specification. The process of producing bespoke ironwork to suit the site and client is what I enjoy. Taking a client’s vision for an empty space, and realising their vision by guiding them through the possibilities and practicalities that hot forging, traditional and contemporary techniques can bring to items of originality and longevity.

As an artist blacksmith William Smith has had a fascination with metal from a young age, when cold its hard and unbending, but when heated and crafted it has a fluid malleable quality, and in the right hands it allows its self to form into many beautiful objects.

William (or Bill to most) has always had a love of natural forms and shapes and often takes his inspiration from nature, creating plant forms of all kinds and the use of traditional blacksmithing techniques to create contemporary form.
